What is so interesting about the Golden Ratio?
Before we get into the intricacies, let’s first understand what the Golden Ratio is. This is a mathematical ratio, 1:1.618, which can be seen in all aspects of our human lives. This ratio is nature’s perfection and is commonly referred to as the Divine Ratio. This ratio is denoted by the Greek letter ∅ [Phi].
I personally call it the Mother of all Ratios.
But why?
What is so special about the Golden Ratio?
This ratio is the basis of all naturally occurring beautiful patterns in the world. Whichever area or field utilizes this will lead to almost near perfection. You would have come across this term in many books such as The Da Vinci Code.
It is super exciting to know that our very own bodies follow this ratio. The ratio of the length of the forearm to hand or the ratio of the height of a person to the height of their navel and so on. This gives the required balance and beauty.
How is the Golden Ratio derived?
In order to derive the Golden Ratio, we need to consider the Fibonacci Series.
0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610….
Now just divide the successive number with its predecessor (exclude 0).
1/1: 1, 2/1: 2, 3/2: 1.5, 5/3: 1.666, 8/5: 1.6, 13/8: 1.625, 21/13: 1.615, 34/21: 1.619, 55/34: 1.6176, 89/55: 1.6181, 144/89: 1.6179, 233/144: 1.618, 377/233: 1.618, 610/377:1.618….
After a certain point, you notice that the ratio becomes constant at (1:1.618). This magical number is the Golden Ratio.
Where is the Golden Ratio used?
This ratio is present in the world, be it natural or man-made. In both cases, the end result is close to perfection.
Golden Ratio in Nature
The shape of the clouds, shapes of flowers and leaves, shapes of stars, and many more follow this Golden Ratio. This helps in keeping elements well-balanced and attractive.
Golden Ratio in Human Body
Math can be used to figure out the perfectly beautiful face. If the ratio of the width of your face to the height of your face is 1:1.618, then, congratulations! Science proves that you have a perfect face cut.
This is one of the main reasons why the Golden Ratio is used in reconstructive and corrective facial surgery.

Golden Ratio in Architecture
Architecture provides evidence that the Golden Ratio is indeed divine. Some of the famous monuments such as the Parthenon (a temple on the Athenian Acropolis, Greece, dedicated to the goddess Athena), the Egyptian Pyramids (where the ratio of the height of the pyramid to either of the sides of its base equals Phi), the Great Mosque of Kairouan, the Stupa of Borobudur in Java, and many more follow the Golden Ratio in their constructions.
These structures, some built many thousand years ago, still stand strong and aesthetically beautiful.
Other areas where the Golden Ratio is used include: company logos and trademarks, photo editing, automotive designs, stock market analysis, and many more.
